Catastrophizing is an irrational belief that something is far worse than it actually is. Catastrophizing generally can take two different forms:
-making a catastrophe out of a current situation, or
-imagining making a catastrophe out of a future situation.
Catastrophizing is one of the most destructive daily habits many people carry with them for a long time. Catastrophizing is the most common habit people use.
This is when you build up a nightmare scenario of how everything could go totally wrong in some situation and imagine a big catastrophe in your mind.
You may have a presentation and your mind starts to pull up a scenario where you have left your notes at home, you make a fool of yourself, you are embarrassed in front the group or your boss yells at you.
Catastrophizing is distressful and self-confidence robbing thoughts.
You can learn to shift your Catastrophizing thoughts:
3 Steps That Will Help When You're Catastrophizing.
Step 1: Loudly say stop to your inner critic, drama, rumination.
The catastrophe that has started to brew in your mind comes from your fear, inner critic and helplessness.
It is telling you: "You will fail because it is what you usually do."
-That you have not prepared enough.
-That the boss will not be pleased with your presentation for some reason or other.
-And 101 other fear based thoughts.
So stop the inner critic quickly. In your mind, as soon as these thoughts pop up, say:
"NO, NO, NO!" "Stop!"
"NOPE, I'm not going down that path again!"
"Delete, Cancel, Reboot."
This will disrupt your train of thought and help you toward feeling more level-headed again.
Step 2: Focus on your breathing.
Be quite for a minute or two. Sit down if possible. Focus on your in- and out-breaths. Nothing else. Breathe in relaxation and breathe out tension.
This will calm your body from the stress and it helps your mind to return to what is transpiring right now in this moment, instead of being lost in future Catastrophizing.

Step 3: Look to the past for the truth.
Think back to your past.
How many times in the past have your catastrophe scenarios that your mind throws at you become reality?
Never or very few times is the fact of the matter.
So remind yourself of the actual facts from the past to draw yourself back to the calmer and more powerful centered version of yourself.
Create a wonderful day moment to moment all ways always.
