The primary election is a long way off, but an Ahwatukee woman said she needs that time as she begins her campaign for justice of the peace in the district that covers Ahwatukee and parts of Tempe and Chandler west of Rural Road.

Wisconsin native Sharron Sauls, an eight-year Ahwatukee resident and mother of two, said that even though she’s not a lawyer, her background and “high achievements in education and her profession” qualify her for the job.

Former Ahwatukee legislator John McComish currently holds the JP post, but he’s expected to retire at the end of the year

“I am not interested in power for power’s sake. I am interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good,” Sauls said in a release announcing her campaign.

Saul said she holds a master’s degree in legal studies from the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law as well as a B.S. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse.

After completing her education, Sauls signed on with the City of Phoenix, working on landlord-tenant rights and housing issues.

“In addition to committing her work experience to housing advocacy, Sharron also has served on several boards and commissions in Maricopa County, which reaffirms her commitment to servant leadership and fighting for the rights of vulnerable and oppressed groups,” her campaign announcement declared.

She also said she has worked for several charitable and community organizations, including the Girl Scouts, Cornerstone Church in Chandler, the Save Our Schools initiative and Keep Kyrene Strong campaign.
